Cindy Sherman Unmasked

That tantalizing sense of mystery and uneasiness are similar emotions viewers feel when they see one of Ms. Sherman's elliptical photographs. Over the course of her remarkable 35-year career she has transformed herself into hundreds of different personas: the movie star, the valley girl, the angry housewife, the frustrated socialite, the Renaissance courtesan, the menacing clown, even the Roman god Bacchus.

A daily form of masquerade that communicates culture, gender and class, has been a constant source of inspiration for Sherman.  Fashion  - History - Detris - are the subject matter of Cindy Sherman's theatrical pictures.  Outlandish and revolting tableau's equally repulsive and seductive become visually rich 'landscapes'; painterly textured and colored.

For nearly 40 years, photographer Cindy Sherman's been her own model, muse, makeup artist and stylist. Now, she's her own plastic surgeon, too.

Working digitally, she can play with her image in ways she couldn't before - narrow her eyes, elongate her nose and thin or thicken her lips. And instead of one Sherman per frame, we can get multiples - doubling or tripling the pleasure of this inimitably mutable artist.
