The blistering, action-packed evening auction of contemporary art at Sotheby's London on February 15 was marked not only by high-flying prices but a loud protest from a band of rebels who infiltrated the sales room.

 

First, the sales: All but five of the 59 lots sold, for a total of $71,051,252 (£44,359,900). The bullish tally comfortably eclipsed the $48.7-68.9 million presale estimate, with just eight percent unsold by lot and four percent by value. The results trailed the $84.7 million (£54 million) result from last February's London sale - though to be fair, it had 18 fewer lots.
