Doug Beube 1950 —

Biography

Ignorance is the curse of God; knowledge is the wing wherewith we fly to heaven.
-William Shakespeare

Sixteen altered volumes of The New World Atlas, compressed for a non-lethal kind of combustion, sit inside the pockets of this vinyl vest. The suicide jacket hangs couture-like on an individual clothing stand, its potential no longer destructive, but domesticated in the power of knowledge it might trigger if its texts were unleashed. From a geopolitical atlas altered in this way, an actual New World might result.

Born in Ontario, Canada, the artist lives and works in New York City.

Beube is a mixed-media artist who works in collage, installation, sculpture and photography. He teaches classes in mixed-media, artist's books and photography, and actively lectures throughout the year. He teaches in the photography department at the Parsons New School, and is a graduate advisor at the School for the Visual Arts in New York City. Beube exhibits worldwide, and his artworks are in numerous private and public collections.

Selected collections include: Brooklyn Museum, NY; Museum of Arts & Design, NY; MOMA; NY Public Library.
