Biography
"We spend our lives retrieving the knowledge that was once ours."
Born in Nottingham, England.
Selected exhibitions: Ben Uri Gallery, Bash Studios, Rivington Galleries, and London.
Regarding The Garment of Light - Bespoke (2003):
"This piece explores the midrash, which describes the clothing given to Adam and Eve by God as ‘garments of light' rather than skins... The design of this art-piece is a deliberate mix of male and female styling. The Midrash is embroidered in white on the collar. The Zohar is printed in red at the bottom of the coat. The fabric is synamay; chosen for its quality to hold a shape while remaining lightweight and transparent, its properties evoke the ‘garment of light'. The Talmud states that after death the body crumbles away like dust, yet the soul remains standing like a garment. This soul of light has been tailored by us in a lifetime, but with God-given repairs."
Regarding The In-Between (Yeshiva):
"This sefer torah corset is based on a pregnant woman's shape. In the Talmud in Niddah 30a, the fetus is poetically described as learning torah from an angel in the womb. On exiting, the angel strikes the baby, forming the indent in the upper lip, causing the baby to forget all the knowledge that it once knew. I have always understood this piece from the fetus' perspective. We are to spend our lives retrieving the knowledge that was once ours. Torah is not a new thing for us, but a retracing of prior learning."
