Michael Knigin 1942 —2011
Biography
"Since my childhood, I have been aware of personal liabilities, tolerance and equality of all people being usurped by the 'law'... It has always been a dream of mine to create a series of [artworks] that pay tribute to the victims of the Holocaust."
Born in Brooklyn, NY.
Knigin attended Temple University, and received a Ford Foundation Grant to study fine art lithography at the Tamarind Lithography Workshop, Los Angeles.
After graduating college in 1966, Knigin started teaching at the Pratt Graphic Center in Manhattan. In 1970 and 1971, he co-authored two books on lithography, "Contemporary Lithographic Workshops Around the World" and "The Technique of Fine Art Lithography". Knigin went on in 1974 to establish the first professional lithography workshop in Israel to train young Israeli artists. After his tenure at the graphic center, he returned to New York, and created his own prints and paintings. At that time, Knigin was appointed a Professor at Pratt Institute, where he still teaches. In 1988, he joined the NASA Art Team and worked to commemorate the Discovery's launch.
Knigin's awards include: A Ford Foundation Grant to study fine art lithography at the Tamarind Lithography Workshop in Los Angeles; a Cleo Award for art direction; fellowship to the American Film Institute in Los Angeles; and, an Art and Technology Grant from the National Society of Illustrators. From 1978 to the present, he held 17 solo shows, and was included in over 120 group shows.
Knigin's artwork is included in over 60 museums and corporate collections, including: Whitney Museum of American Art; Albright-Knox Museum; Smithsonian Institute; Carnegie Mellon Institute; Library of Congress; Brooklyn Museum; Israel Museum; Bronx Botanical Gardens - among several others.
